Stop the federal government from forcing states into Common Core. Protect local control over education, and encourage school choice.
As a mother, a grandmother, and a former college instructor, I believe that our children deserve every educational opportunity we can give them.
In Congress, I proudly voted for the Every Student Succeeds Act, legislation signed into law to overhaul No Child Left Behind, prohibit government-coerced participation in Common Core, and preserve local control in our education system.
A firm believer in school choice, I also supported the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results (SOAR) Reauthorization Act, legislation that leverages Congress’s oversight role into Washington DC funding to ensure that DC education funds specifically include charter schools and scholarships for low-income families to use towards private schooling in situations where the student’s assigned public school may not be up to par. If we can showcase the success of school choice in Washington D.C., states can choose to replicate it nationwide.
Expanding pathways to education for our children also means working to eliminate the confusion and guesswork that is often associated with education-related tax deductions. For that reason, I authored the Student and Family Tax Simplification Act, legislation to rework the tax code for students and make it easier for families to plan, save, and invest in education. Specifically, my bill consolidates four existing education tax provisions into a single, modernized, permanent tax credit that is partially refundable and is weighted to help students who are most in need.
Tennessee’s parents, teachers, principals, and superintendents know better than any Washington bureaucrat what it takes to serve the needs of our communities’ specific student populations. My goal with all education policy is to empower them so they can, in turn, empower our students to succeed.
