Black Decries Obama Administration’s Back-Door Amnesty Power-Grab
WASHINGTON – Today, President Barack Obama’s new selective deportation policy goes into effect making an estimated 1.7 million illegal immigrants eligible for tentative legal status. Congressman Diane Black (R-TN) released the following statement on the president’s new policy:
“The president’s so-called ‘policy change’ amounts to back-door amnesty that will be funded on the backs of hard-working, law-abiding Americans. The Obama administration is not only violating United States immigration law, it is also openly circumventing the will of the people and authority of its representatives in Congress. This policy mirrors a far broader version of the DREAM Act that was rejected by Congress on a bipartisan basis. It amounts to an executive branch power-grab that flies in the face of the constitution and over 200 years of historical precedent. For more than three years, the president has used constitutionally suspect policy changes, executive orders and regulatory fiat to implement his agenda regardless of Congress’ objections.
While unemployment remains above 8 percent for the last 42 straight months, the president has decided – yet again – to put election year politics and illegal immigrants ahead of the rule of law and the interest of the American people. This is insulting to every law-abiding American, but particularly for the nearly 13 million unemployed Americans who are currently jobless and unable to provide for their families.
When the administration announced its selective deportation policy change on June 15, 2012, I immediately sent a letter to the president calling on him to reverse his decision. Two months later, I have yet to receive a response from the president or his staff. As long as this decision stands, I will continue to pursue all means necessary whether that is through legislation or the court system to fight this outrageous power-grab by the president.”
Rep. Back is a co-sponsor of Rep. Quayle’s H.R. 5953, the Prohibiting Back-door Amnesty Act that will reverse President Obama’s decision to grant legal status to young illegal immigrants.
