Black Statement on HHS Navigator Grant Awards

Aug 15, 2013 Issues: Health

Washington – Today, Congressman Diane Black (R-TN-06) issued the following statement on the news that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded $67 million to Obamacare “Navigators” to assist with program enrollment:

“The access these ‘Navigators’ will be given to private Americans’ records present staggering opportunities for fraud and abuse. According to the information HHS has provided, all that these ‘Navigators” have to do to get access to sensitive taxpayer information is complete a one page application and as little as 20 hours of training – no background check is required. What makes this announcement even worse is that, in addition to the already announced grant to Planned Parenthood in D.C, three state-based Planned Parenthood affiliates will receive a total of about $655,000 from the federal government, despite assurances from the President when the law was passed that Obamacare would not give federal funding to abortion providers.

“Protecting taxpayers from the potential for abuse under this program is critical, and is why I have introduced H.R.2087, the Protecting Taxpayer Dollars and Identity under Obamacare Act, which would prohibit federal funding of the Obamacare ‘Navigator’ program. Until this disastrous law can successfully be repealed, we must do what we can to protect the American public.”
