Washington, DC– Today Congressman Diane Black (R-TN-06), a nurse for more than 40 years and member of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus, spoke at a House GOP leadership press conference to urge support for her legislation, the  Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015 (H.R. 3134). The House is slated to vote on the bill later this week. A transcript of Congressman Black’s remarks as prepared for delivery is provided below:

Good morning. Let me be completely transparent with you today: As a nurse for more than 40 years and as a pro-life woman, I oppose Planned Parenthood – videos or no videos.

I’ve said for years that we have a moral obligation to act against the nation’s largest abortion provider – which receives some $500 million in taxpayer funding annually. But in light of recent videos implicating Planned Parenthood in the illegal trafficking of fetal tissue, we now have clear legal reasons to take action as well.

Every single Member of Congress, pro-life and pro-choice alike,  should want to ensure that laws are followed and that taxpayer dollars are spent with integrity. That’s not an ideological extreme- that’s called doing our job.

As we speak, three Congressional committees are conducting a thorough review of Planned Parenthood’s actions, but there are more than enough lingering questions to stop the money flow to this abortion giant until investigations are complete. That is what my bill, the Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015 will accomplish.

Importantly, this legislation does not cut a single dime from public health funding. Instead, it prioritizes women’s health care over abortion by reallocating funding to the more than 13,500 facilities nationwide that provide true preventive care to those who need it most.

Look, we face big challenges in Congress this fall, but nothing – nothing – could be more important than how we treat a human life. This is why I devoted my life to healthcare. It is why I serve in Washington. And it is why I authored this bill.

I’m looking forward to a strong showing of support in the House, and then I will be personally calling every Senator I know so that we can get this measure to the President’s desk.

Thank you.
