Rep. Black Supports Reconciliation Bill to Dismantle Obamacare, Defund Planned Parenthood
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Diane Black (R-TN-06), a nurse for more than 40 years and member of the House Budget Committee, voted to pass the Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act. The legislation uses the budget reconciliation tool to repeal core pillars of Obamacare – including the individual and employer mandates and more than a dozen of the law’s most onerous taxes – and to reallocate federal funding for Planned Parenthood to the more than 13,500 community health centers nationwide that provide preventive healthcare services to low-income and underserved women without performing abortions.
The legislation passed by a vote of 240 to 181. Congressman Black released the following statement:
“I cannot think of a more worthwhile way to begin this legislative year than by passing this sorely needed legislation to repeal the most onerous provisions of Obamacare and combat the abuses of innocent life at Planned Parenthood. As a nurse for more than 40 years, these are two issues especially close to my heart. By every measure, Obamacare has been an abject failure. It has resulted in higher premiums, fewer choices, and lost jobs. Meanwhile, real and legitimate questions remain about potential illegal activities at Planned Parenthood, and its own annual report shows that taxpayer funding for this organization has increased over the last year, while its preventive healthcare services have dropped,” said Congressman Diane Black.
Congressman Black added, “Congress should not be silent on these fronts, and we must not allow veto threats and political posturing from a lame-duck White House to stop us from putting our priorities on the table for all to see. By sending this reconciliation bill to the President’s desk, we can finally put him on record. If he truly believes taxpayers should continue to foot the bill for a disastrous healthcare law and a scandal-ridden abortion giant, that is on his conscience, but he should at least be forced to put pen to paper and defend that decision to the American people. What’s more, with this bill, we have set a precedent for what our conservative majorities can accomplish in 2017 with the help of a willing partner in the White House. Today, President Obama is the only thing standing between our efforts to restore a culture of life and protect Americans from Obamacare. This legislation will be an important reminder of that truth.”
